Let’s Talk Birth Plans
A birth plan is a communication tool to inform your healthcare team (providers and nurses) of your wishes and desires during your labor, delivery, and postpartum experience. It details what you want and doesn’t want to happen during your labor and birth.
The birth plan can be elaborate or simple. Nevertheless, it needs to be flexible and acknowledge that things may not go according to plan. For that reason, it is considerate to write a plan so that your OB provider doesn’t feel their hands are tied if complications arise.
Birth plan templates can be easily accessed on the internet. Some are located on Etsy for a small fee, while others can be Googled for free. Your birth plan is personal to you and is worth considering the options available and the policies and procedures at the facility you are planning to deliver.
Before writing your birth plan, I recommend writing down your ideas and thoughts and discussing them with your OB healthcare provider to make shared, informed decisions. I would advise having a conversation with your support person, who will be available during delivery.
While the midwife/OB is the expert in obstetrics, you are the expert of your body. Ultimately, you do not have to write a formal birth plan. It is completely optional.
There is a free birth plan template available to you on the Education is Power page. It's a good place to start. Remember to alway be FLEXIBLE!!
